Dorset LEP host Dorset Careers Live event with Cornerstone Employer Marriott

Dorset LEP host Dorset Careers Live event with Cornerstone Employer Marriott

Dorset LEP’s Dorset Careers Hub recently hosted the latest in its Dorset Careers Live series – An Introduction to Careers in the Hospitality Sector with Marriott. The event was attended by students, teachers, parents and carers who were keen to discover insights and career opportunities in the hospitality industry.

The event covered a variety of job roles and discussed the routes which students could take to achieve them such as work experience, apprenticeships, part time work, A-levels and graduate programmes.

Steve Williams, Dorset LEP’s Dorset Careers Hub Lead, said: “Hospitality is a key sector in Dorset, employing 33,000 people and contributing £710 million to the Dorset economy. Given that many of the businesses have been in complete lockdown during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic with most premises having to close doors for extensive periods, these industries have taken a serious hit.

“This event was an excellent opportunity for students in our region to learn more about the career paths available in the hospitality sector, with expert insight provided by our Cornerstone Employer and global brand, Marriott.”

Despite the setbacks, hospitality in Dorset showed resilience during the summer of 2020 and the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme when UK holidaymakers flocked to the county. Dorset LEP’s Labour Market and Skills research provides the latest insights on the changing employment landscape as the county navigates its economic recovery.

Tammy Markley, Assistant Cluster Director of HR in South, West and Wales, introduced the event. She said: “It has never been so important to raise awareness of the career opportunities available in the hospitality sector, particularly due to the impact that the industry has faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are delighted to let everyone know that Marriott as a company - and the hospitality sector as a whole - is here to stay.”

Becki Taylor, Multi-Property Human Resources Manager at Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott and Portsmouth Marriott Hotels, discussed the various ways to begin a career in hospitality: “Apprenticeships are a great way to develop practical skills whilst earning, as soon as you finish school. Marriott offer apprenticeship roles in finance and accounting, hospitality, professional chefs, leadership and management and customer service. I personally joined the Graduate Voyage Programme, Marriott’s award-winning global leadership development programme. You receive hands on and virtual training in many disciplines so you can immerse yourself in all of the different departments.”
