Project Summary

This project proposes a new indoor facility to offer nature and environment related activities.

The Green Classroom, situated at Hengistbury Head, will be an accessible structure built from two clad shipping containers with a connecting covered deck area. The building will be a secure and sheltered meeting point for Kingston Maurward College to run activities and events, allowing introductions to staff and activities to take place in a more structured way.

This facility will complement BCP Council's Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre. BCP Council will manage and maintain the building as well as run sessions for primary and secondary groups (and other paid activities). Kingston Maurward College will provide staffing, additional expertise and financial income based upon government funded courses that would run at the room.

The Green Classroom will...

  • Provide housing for technical equipment and resources which will allow for offer of engaging, original and inspirational activities involving the use of augmented reality – available to all visitors
  • Provide a secure and dedicated space for storing of materials, exhibits, equipment and for attendees’ personal items
  • Provide shelter and lunchtime space for groups visiting all day
  • Provide an offer of alternative activities should weather affect the planned programme

Supporting this project is an evolving report on Natural Value. This is co-authored by Dorset LEP and Dorset Local Nature Partnership (DLNP). It recognises that Dorset LEP and the DLNP are working in partnership to support economic growth which is not at the expense for the natural environment. It also notes that the Dorset Local Industrial Strategy has a commitment to creating a programme of cultural excellence that enhances natural assets.
