castle court - portland

The Dorset LEP Growing Places Fund loan awarded to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council funded the development of the Castle Court Public Realm works at Osprey Quay, Portland.

Project Status - Completed

  • Start Date: April 2013
  • End Date: September 2015
  • Growing Places Fund allocation: £500,000
  • Awarded to: Weymouth & Portland Borough Council (now Dorset Council)

Project Summary:

The project focused on soft and hard landscaping to create the new Liberty Square in front of the derelict Navy Canteen Building, a much loved landmark from the days of HMS Osprey. The works provided a major aesthetic enhancement to this area of the business park, and also stimulated further developer interest and investment by removing the significant financial burden to deliver this public open space which would otherwise have fallen on individual developers and which made development unviable.

The project was fully completed in 2014 and played a major role in unlocking the redevelopment of the former Navy Canteen Building by local housing developer ZeroC. The whole site now offers 21 apartment units within the existing Canteen building for shared ownership (which completed in November 2018) and a further 47 residential houses and flats.
