Employers and volunteers

Bringing employers, schools and colleges together to transform careers education.

Your support and collaboration is key to the work of Dorset Careers Hub and the success of our young people.

We need local businesses, innovators and industry experts to work with us to help achieve the goals of the Government’s careers strategy, delivered by us in partnership with The Careers & Enterprise Company.

We work hand in hand with our schools & colleges to ensure that they implement effective and proactive careers guidance in line with The Gatsby Benchmarks. A key part of this is giving all 11-19-year olds the opportunity to learn from employers about work and the skills needed, via workplace encounters and work experience.

The benefits to a company and our young people, tomorrow’s workforce, are proven and significant. Whilst helping young people to explore their options, learn about and succeed in the world of work, you are also raising awareness of your industry and company, attracting future talent to meet your long-term recruitment goals.

We work on a range of initiatives and events throughout the year and these are just some of the ways you can get involved, with varying degrees of time commitment. Visit our Get involved page to offer your support.

Cornerstone Employers are companies who are experienced in engaging with, and give strategic, proactive support to schools and colleges to enhance their careers provision. We are keen to talk to you if you meet the above criteria and especially if you are part of the creative industries sector in Dorset.

This is a hugely worthwhile volunteer post whereby your time, experience, expertise, relationship building skills and passion for developing and supporting the workforce of tomorrow, will bring about positive change in local schools and colleges. Your role as an Enterprise Adviser can support young peoples’ pathways into your industry and shape their careers.

Bridging the gap between the world of work and education, you will work with the Careers Leader and wider senior leaders of your assigned school or college to create opportunities for young people.

By taking part in work experience, you, the employer, will gain the opportunity to help shape your future workforce, promote your company and industry whilst helping schools to achieve Gatsby Benchmark 6 in line with government guidelines.

Work experience gives young people a chance to develop skills and confidence, learn how organisations work, and find out which local industries and career paths they could take.

In line with Gatsby Benchmark 5, every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including, but not limited to, visiting speakers, careers fairs, mentoring and enterprise schemes and mock interviews.

If you’d like to help young people in one of the above ways, or have an idea for an alternative workplace encounter, please email

Dorset Careers Hub, local councils, and some schools and trusts independently, organise a range of careers events throughout the year. These provide a vital opportunity for young people to learn about career opportunities in their local area and get advice and guidance from employers and education providers, in one place.

In 2021, Dorset Careers Hub organised the highly successful Virtual Careers & Apprenticeship Show, the biggest online Careers & Apprenticeship Show in the south, in conjunction with partners across Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey, attracting a staggering 20,000 + attendees.

If you would like to access Dorset’s future talent, have multiple job vacancies or apprenticeships to offer throughout the year and would like to exhibit for free at an event, please email
