Dorset LEP takes scrutiny very seriously. In 2019 we fully reviewed our scrutiny arrangements to ensure that all of our activities and investments are open and transparent, and in line with the National Assurance Framework. Overview and scrutiny is an essential element of assuring democratic accountability for the use of public funds.

Dorset LEP has appropriate scrutiny arrangements in place to ensure that our decisions receive the necessary independent and external review. Prior to the 1st April 2019, Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), Dorset LEP was scrutinised by nine local councils to guarantee the effective and appropriate democratic scrutiny of our decisions. We have attended and presented at a number of overview and scrutiny meetings at the request of our local partners. In addition, local councillors have played an important part in our governance structure. For example, this is documented in the Dorset County Council’s Overview and Scrutiny meeting minutes from March 2019.

In mid-2019, we reviewed our governance structure and come to an agreement with both councils to set up a single independent committee for the whole Dorset geography. The group will act as a critical friend, enabling increased transparency of the decisions made by Dorset LEP. This independent committee will be able to explore and interrogate the rationale for decisions made by the Dorset LEP Board. The committee will make positive recommendations for how future decision of Dorset LEP can be effectively implemented or improved.

The Overview and Scrutiny Committee is part of a governance structure of Dorset LEP and is fully accountable to the Dorset LEP Board. You can find more information on the Committee here.
