A338 Wessex Fields link road plans available online

Plans for a new link road and junction directly from the A338 to connect with the Wessex Fields business park are now available to view online.

Delivered as part of Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership’s Bournemouth International Growth (BIG) Programme the proposed scheme will improve the transport infrastructure in this part of the town by creating a new access from the A338.

Councillor Mike Greene, Bournemouth’s Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, said; “Wessex Fields is a major asset in Bournemouth already earmarked for employment. However, the existing road networks are congested, inadequate and are acting as a barrier to growth. Through additional government funding we have an opportunity to transform the transport infrastructure, by connecting the Wessex Fields business park and surrounding area to the A338.”

Lorna Carver, Director, Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, said; “We welcome and support the submission of the planning application for the development of the Wessex Fields business park.  We successfully secured government local growth funding to invest in this vital employment site which is currently hindered by poor access and traffic congestion.

“The proposed link road and junction around Wessex Fields will open up major economic opportunities for Dorset - unlocking new employment land and creating jobs. The proposed development will also safeguard existing jobs, improve connectivity, encourage sustainable travel and provide a second access route into the Royal Bournemouth Hospital – all excellent benefits for Dorset’s businesses and people.”

The scheme will facilitate the creation of new jobs and retain current employment opportunities, improve traffic flows and enhance facilities for cyclists, pedestrians and bus users. The planning application submitted consists of Phase 1 and Phase 2. At the current time, only Phase 1 has funding from the Dorset LEP, with construction due to commence in Spring 2019 subject to planning consent.

A series of events will be held in the new year offering the opportunity for the public to view the application and talk to the Project Team.
