On the eve of November 25th, MBA students from Bournemouth University (BU) came together in a series of presentations centred around the theme of ‘Competitive Dorset: Doing Business Across Cultures”.

Led and planned by a team of BU academics, under the direction of MBA Programme Director, Dr Milena Bobeva, the event showcased the talents of the BU MBA students as potential sources of competitive advantage for Dorset businesses, who are seeking to expand globally.

The presentations outlined new ways of enhancing relationships with organisations in Dorset, to enable them to discover global entrepreneurial and other business opportunities.

Part of the brief was to represent a consultancy company that was based in the UK, but with offices around the world.

The consultancy companies are asked to present to organisations such as the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the Dorset Chamber of Commerce (DCCI) and UK Trade and Industry South-West (UKTI South-West), to support the launch of the LEP theme - ‘Competitive Dorset’.

Mark Ridolfo, Principle Lecturer at BU’s Faculty of Management, said:

“Bournemouth University is really keen to work with local enterprises and organisations and this helped us to formulate the brief’s themes. We had presentations on India, China, Thailand and Brazil and were really impressed with how our students performed, which received fantastic feedback from our guests. We very much look forward to doing this again.”

The event was the first of its kind and demonstrated how international students at BU could, with appropriate mentoring and training, provide vital intelligence for local regional businesses who are considering going global. This included key research in cultural patterns of foreign entrepreneurs and sectors for opportunity and growth and export.

Among the attendees were managers from Barclays, Regional and International Business developers from Santander and representatives from the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Skills & Learning team.
