Dorset-based digital company supports charities during coronavirus pandemic

Dorset Gateway spoke to Bournemouth-based 3 Sided Cube, an app development and digital product company specialising in ‘tech for good’, about the work it is doing to support charities during COVID-19. 3 Sided Cube works with change-maker brands including Lush, Global Forest Watch and RSPB to build digital platforms that deliver real impact and make a difference to people.

One of its clients, US blood supplier the American Red Cross, has been particularly affected by the coronavirus crisis. Nearly 4,500 blood drives were cancelled due to business and college campus closures, resulting in over 150,000 fewer blood donations. With blood in constant demand, the American Red Cross faced severe blood shortages - blood banks were running low and donations were continuing to drop-off. The American Red Cross started to actively campaign across its media channels to encourage more donations and combat the blood shortage.

3 Sided Cube, which developed the world’s first blood tracking app for the American Red Cross, has been working closely with the organisation since the start of March to ensure that its blood donations app could withhold an extreme increase in donations. The app has proved secure, robust, and scalable, supporting over 170,000 blood appointment bookings last month, the largest number of appointments ever booked in one month.

3 Sided Cube has also been working closely with The British Red Cross to create a nationwide Community Reserve Volunteer website. The initiative has already seen over 78,000 people sign up to support their community during a crisis.

Sophia Story, Director, 3 Sided Cube said: "Our mission is all about having impact, and that is what we are doing with our clients, ensuring they are able to make a difference to millions of lives. Our team is working tirelessly to make sure that we are delivering tech solutions that are going to really have that impact in these uncertain circumstances."
