High Potential Opportunity for Dorset’s Sustainable Aquaculture

High Potential Opportunity for Dorset’s Sustainable Aquaculture

Dorset’s thriving Aquaculture sector has been identified by the Department for International Trade (DIT) as a High Potential Opportunity for inward investment.

Also known as aquafarming, aquaculture is the farming of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other organisms.

The excellent water quality of Dorset’s inshore waters has enabled a diversity of aquaculture to develop and there is significant potential for this sector to expand at sea and on land.

The county is also home to Cefas (Centre for Environment Fisheries & Aquaculture Science), a world leader in marine science and technology.

The High Potential Opportunity scheme, coordinated by the Department for International Trade, identifies opportunities to attract foreign direct investment into emerging sectors, regions and clusters – creating new jobs and growth.

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has been working closely with local organisations Cefas, Kingston Maurward College, Dorset Coast Forum, Portland Port, Dorset and East Devon Flag, and the Department for International Trade to develop the proposition.

Dorset LEP board member and Director of Business Development at Altas Elektronik UK John Sutcliffe said: “The HPO is an opportunity to draw on Government international marketing of unique capability in Dorset. This will bring investment, interest and also help local aquaculture sector to grow.”
