Project Summary

- Phase 1: Purchase of equipment to establish the Orthopaedic Research Institute - COMPLETED.

- Phase 2: Purchase of additional equipment and expansion of ORI as a global gateway - COMPLETED

Phase 1 PROJECT COMPLETED

Local Growth Fund awarded to establish a research centre of excellence in orthopaedics at Bournemouth University, to grow Dorset’s Orthopaedic Development and Innovation Accelerator Cluster of innovative businesses in this field.

Phase 2 - PROJECT COMPLETED

Local Growth Funding has enhanced BU ORI facilities and funded additional equipment, to provide training for UK and overseas surgeons and other high-value healthcare professionals, and to deliver training in conjunction with industry.

This will accelerate the global reach of ground breaking Orthopaedic Research at Bournemouth University and a presence in BU Global hubs currently being set up in South Africa and planned for India, Australasia and Eastern Europe.

Phase 2 outcomes:

  • To attract up to £100M inward investment by supporting at least 2 companies per year for 5 years, through R&D activity and introduction to global market through ORI global hubs.
  • To create up to 200 jobs within ORI and through associated partners over 5 years.
  • To train 100 surgeons and health professionals every year through postgraduate courses.
  • To enrol 170 participants per year in clinical trials
