Project Status - Completed

  • Start Date: 26/11/2015
  • End Date: 31/03/2017
  • Local Growth Fund allocation: £593,957
  • Awarded to: Dorset's Council Partnership (now Dorset Council)

Project Summary:

Dorset Councils Partnership, its partners and the local community wanted to shape and develop a clear strategy to deliver a brighter future for Weymouth town centre and also contribute to the wider economic growth potential of Weymouth, Dorchester, and Portland.

The Western Growth Corridor was in need of an ambitious economic plan. A strategy of this type had widespread public support with the population supporting significant changes to ensure a prosperous future for the town and surrounding area.

Dorset LEP Local Growth Funding was used for feasibility work in advance of developing the Western Dorset Economic Growth Strategy.

The strategy envisages a development of 2,500 new homes and up to 800 new jobs across five brownfield sites to bring greater prosperity and create a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and visit.

The Western Dorset Economic Growth Strategy was adopted by Dorset Councils Partnership (Weymouth and Portland Borough and West Dorset and North Dorset District Councils) and Dorset County Council in December 2016. The first 5 year Action Plan of the strategy was agreed and adopted in April 2017.

Outcomes:

  • 2,500 homes built
  • Target of up to 800 jobs created.
  • £11m leverage of public assets to deliver WGC Strategy
  • 23.4 HA land unlocked
