Q&A with Dorset LEP Board member, Sophia Story

We’re looking for new board members and are especially keen to receive applications from private sector leaders from all sectors, backgrounds and experiences to help drive forward Dorset’s recovery plans and potential for economic growth.

To help applicants understand what’s involved board member and Director of award-winning 3 SIDED CUBE, Sophia Story, shares her experiences as our newest board member and representative for SMEs.

What have you enjoyed the most and what has made you most proud to be a Dorset LEP board member?

“I have genuinely enjoyed learning all about Dorset LEP and the impact it has had to date for Dorset. Playing a small role in helping Dorset LEP change Dorset is hugely exciting. I feel lucky to be part of a team that are changing things up for the better!”

How have you benefited the most? 

“Meeting new people and learning how to work with a wide variety of stakeholders - more than I’ve been used to.”

What attracted you to join the Dorset LEP board?

“I wanted to gain experience on an external board, and someone very kindly made me aware of the Dorset LEP board vacancies. I did a bit of research and was pleasantly surprised at how impactful Dorset LEP is. The opportunity to help economic growth within an area of the UK that I’m hugely passionate about really struck me. Meeting the team made me want to join even more.”

What advice do you have for business leaders, particularly women, interested in supporting Dorset LEP?

“Do it! The team is wonderfully welcoming and everyone is genuinely trying to have a positive impact! Don’t overthink it and just get in touch.”

What expertise would you like to see join you on the board?

“I would love to see some more people from start-up backgrounds... creative thinkers that inspire!”
